Treatment Information
Herbal medicine is one of the oldest systems of medicine known to mankind. It is a natural form of healing using plant remedies to support optimum health and encourage healing.
The remedies are made from parts of the whole plant (eg leaves, berries, roots, seeds) rather than an isolated constituent. Plants are already part of our natural diet, and as medicines, herbs are generally well tolerated.
Herbalists work holistically taking into account all aspects of a patient's health and consider the underlying causes of the problem, not just the symptoms. The aim is to support the body's own natural healing potential in a gentle effective way to help restore balance and improve health.
Treatment combines elements of traditional herbal wisdom passed down through the centuries together with modern scientific research.
Although many herbs can safely be used alongside prescription drugs, some plant medicines can interact with drugs, so medical herbalists take into account any past or current prescription medicines before dispensing herbal medicines.
An individual prescription is made up according to the needs of each patient. This is often in the form of a liquid tincture, but other treatments might include teas, juices, syrups, powders, capsules, creams or ointments. Dietary and lifestyle advice may also be given if appropriate.
Herbal medicine is appropriate for all ages from the very young to the very elderly.
An initial consultation lasts for a minimum of one hour. Progress is then monitored at follow up appointments lasting half an hour when the prescription may be adjusted according to progress.
